ISC High Performance 2025: Connecting the dots

This year’s ISC, themed “Connecting the dots,” was a blast for NHR4CES. We were again represented at the NHR booth together with the other NHR centers. The ISC, which celebrated its 40th anniversary, is one of the world’s leading forums for promoting the application of high-performance computing. This year’s theme emphasized the conference’s role in promoting global collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing within the HPC community.

Once again, this year, interested visitors to the NHR booth engaged with our experts about our high-performance computers, CLAIX-2023 and Lichtenberg II. Our NHR4CES members also actively participated in the conference program. They again hosted the now-established Sofa Talks, this time on the topics of “Connecting Visualization and High-Performance Computing” and “GPU- and ML-Benchmarking for HPC Procurements”. These Sofa Talks, held in a relaxed atmosphere, were well attended again this year. “Familiar faces returned, new ones joined, and the community continues to embrace the NHR4CES Sofa Talk as a space for meaningful dialogue about HPC and visualization,” reflects Tim Gerrits of our CSG Visualization and host of a Sofa Talk.

“This year’s session brought together a dynamic mix of researchers and industry experts to share insights, explore current challenges, and reflect on how the field has evolved since our last gathering. The trend is clear: engagement is growing, the discussions are getting deeper, and the value of coming together in this setting is stronger than ever,” Gerrits continued.

Sandra Wienke from our CSG Parallelism and Performance reports about her Sofa Talk on benchmarking: “After my presentation, we talked about the current use of ML codes (training and inference) on the respective HPC clusters, discussed the use of various ML benchmarks for our HPC procurements, and exchanged experiences and insights. These approaches for HPC procurements currently vary significantly among the different centers. Nevertheless, most HPC centers seem satisfied with the (prospective) outcome of their approach.”

In addition, NHR4CES offered various paper presentations, workshops, and talks. Two half-day tutorials on the topics of “Mastering Tasking with OpenMP 6.0” and “Advanced OpenMP: Performance and 6.0 Features” featured on the program and were very well received. Please find all offers in detail here.

We are very satisfied with the number of visitors to our offers as well as the intensive exchange and connection with other interested parties and are already looking forward to the ISC Conference 2026.
