Biography

Matthias holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Freiburg, Germany. Since 2021, he works as a Ph.D. student at the Data and AI Systems Lab at the Technical University of Darmstadt and is supervised by Prof. Carsten Binnig.

Thematic Advice

In today’s industries, huge amounts of non-relational multi-modal data (e.g. images, docu-ments, sensor data, …) need to be stored and processed. Since these data modalities cannot be stored and queried easily in today’s databases, they are usually stored in data lakes, which, however, makes gaining insights from these modalities hard.

Matthias works on data systems that allow users to store and query such multi-modal data without manual overhead. His work aims to enable domain experts such as physicians or man-agement staff to extract information from multi-modal data.

Through his research, Matthias has acquired experience in designing, implementing, and eval-uating systems that extract information from unstructured and multi-modal data sources such as text or image collections.

Professional Competence

Matthias’ research is primarily centered around the intersection of natural language pro-cessing, multi-modal machine learning, and data management systems. A major goal of his is to enable databases to support queries on multi-modal data using natural language. This would allow laypersons to gain insights from multi-modal data without the time-consuming interaction with data experts.
